A New Hope, A New Haven
-
2009 Capital Campaign
The increase in family homelessness has outstripped the capacity of The Haven’s current building.
- In 2008, 83% of the families (199 family units with 345 children) who sought shelter at The Haven were turned away due to limited capacity, a dramatic increase over the 52% turned away in 2007.
- South Carolina ranks 39 of 50 among states on the report card on child homelessness (National Center on Family Homelessness)
Your help is needed now to purchase a facility that will increase sheltering capacity by 65% and provide space for vital programs
-
Why Now?
An existing shelter facility is available for purchase with immediate move-in and no major renovation. The floor plan offers these improvements over current facility:
- Living space of approximately 9,000 sq. ft. (current ~ 5,200)
- Increases capacity from 27 beds to 42 beds
- Seven bathrooms (current facility has three bathrooms)
- Ample living space and expanded staff office space to ensure beneficiary privacy
- A large, safe fenced playground and indoor playroom
- Room for expansion of Daily Living Skills program (a key to the achievement of stable housing status)
-
Why Support The Haven?
- It is one of only two options in Spartanburg for homeless families and the only one to offer shelter to families in a permanent location.
- It’s more than a shelter: The Daily Living Skills program provides training in budgeting, family management, job interviewing skills, and more; case management supports and tracks beneficiaries for long-term success.
- The Haven is a good steward of resources, with an average operating cost of $25 per person per night.
- The Haven makes a positive difference in the community by equipping those it serves with the knowledge and skills to be productive citizens.
